Technological infrastructure for research. CIEM is setting up a lab to further support the research on Emergency Management.
CIEM Lab@UiA is a newly established competence center for accelerating innovation and research in future crisis management technology. Coupled with planned CIEM Lab@Stoa that connects CIEM Lab with Agder 110, a stronger foundation will be instituted as a basis for cooperation between first responders, private sectors and academia for knowledge exchange and training. CIEM Lab@Stoa will serve as “living lab” for participatory research and training, while the CIEM Lab is designated as an experimental control room, information sharing and collaboration platform and research/teaching lab for new ICT technology experimentations. CIEM Lab envisions itself as a hub that links researches and business development to promote Agder Resilience and Agder Smart Region.
The first phase of CIEM Lab focus on laying the foundation for the research direction and project activities and explores the recent and future crisis management technology. For this purpose, CIEM has invested in some recent technologies, one of them is smart glasses. A student project for developing a system for real-time scene recognition using deep learning technique is exploiting the smart glasses. CIEM Lab will also strengthen SmartEMIS project through the creation of a dashboard for a social media based crisis information. Moreover, the Lab will setup the infrastructure for information sharing and collaboration that support emergency planning and response through visualization on maps and geospatial analytics.
